I’ve been listening to a ton of Justin Townes Earle for the past couple of weeks. I really like his acoustic blues songs. Harlem River Blues is not good for my health, but Champagne Corrolla is good for my health.

I love Harlem River Blues, but that’s a hard song to listen to for me right now.
This is a better choice. :)

Shame he’s gone.

Very true. I was aware of him, but only gave him a listen for the 1st time 2 weeks ago.

I had tickets to see him at a venue right next to my house not long ago and skipped it assuming I’d catch him next time around.
I saw his dad open up for John Prine once. He decided it was good time to discuss his personal politics while telling the audience that if they didn’t share his views we were all dumb and was quickly shouted off the stage, which was the first time I’ve seen that. He only got through two songs. Prine sauntered onto the stage a few minutes later, adjusted the mic, did about 20 seconds of tuning, looked out at the audience and said “Thanks for warming ‘em up, Steve,” and started his set.

I saw an interview where the interviewer asked him what it is like to play with his dad. His response was, “it is what it is like watching 2 Earles fight.” Also, “When opening for my dad I like to cover one of his songs he usually likes to play, so he can’t play it, and it pisses him off.”

I would hazard a guess that Steve Earle was not a good father. Between the touring, the drinking, the heroin, the prison and the womanizing, there was probably precious little time for parenting.
I read a quote where JTE was asked what it was like growing up with Steve Earle as a father and his response was along the lines of “I wouldn’t have any idea.”

Yeah,
he said his father being absent when he was a kid was very formative. He credits his mom for raising him, and being the man he is. It seems like Steve only taught him how to make a living playing music. Which is a good thing because
Justin said, “I only know how to make a living 2 ways playing music and the other is illegal (insinuated selling drugs.)“
